The Downloads-per-Rating Study 2026

How many downloads does one rating represent? We measured it across 252,554 Google Play apps — one snapshot, taken August 3, 2026 — and the median answer is one rating per ~155 installs. But the honest answer is that there is no single number: the ratio runs from 76 installs per rating in Casino to 472 in Educational games, paid apps collect a rating every ~32 installs, and apps under 10,000 installs every ~30. Anyone converting rating counts to downloads with one universal multiplier is off by up to 6× on category alone.

Why Google Play: it is the only store that publishes install counts, so the installs-to-ratings relationship can actually be measured there — every figure on this page is a direct measurement of public store data, not a modeled estimate. The ratio is lifetime: total installs (bracket floor) divided by total ratings. The headline findings

Five things the data says

  • There is no universal ratio. The store-wide median is one rating per 155 installs, but the middle half of apps ranges from 73 to 318 — before you even split by category. Any single "downloads = ratings × N" rule of thumb is a guess dressed up as a constant.
  • Category moves the ratio 6.2×. Educational games take a median 472 installs to earn one rating and Racing 361 — their players are kids, and kids don't rate. Casino sits at 76 and Finance at 89 — money on the line turns users into raters.
  • Paying is the strongest rating trigger we measured. Paid apps collect one rating per ~32 installs; free ad-supported apps need ~198. People who spent money upfront rate about six times more often per install.
  • Score and rating velocity rise together. Apps rated 4.5★+ earn a rating every ~92 installs; apps under 3.5★ every ~270. The likely mechanism is the rating prompt — apps that ask at the right moment get more ratings and better ones.
  • Small apps break the table. Under 10,000 installs the median is one rating per just 30 installs — early ratings are heavily solicited (friends, communities, prompt-on-first-open). The ratio only stabilizes near ~200 in the 100K–10M range.

The category you build in sets how often your users rate — before you make a single product decision. The extremes tell the story: audiences that are children (Educational, Racing) almost never rate, while audiences with money or stakes involved (Casino, Finance, Card) rate constantly. Why one multiplier fails

The ratio depends on how big the app already is

The installs-per-rating ratio is not a constant over an app's life. Tiny apps run on solicited ratings — friends, launch communities, a prompt on first open — so they show one rating per just 30 installs. As real distribution takes over, the ratio climbs and settles around ~200 for apps between 100K and 10M installs, then dips to ~170 for the 10M+ giants, whose install bases include years of pre-prompt history and re-installs.

Monetization changes who rates

Paid users rate six times more often

Split the same 252,554 apps by monetization model and the biggest behavioral gap in this study appears: people who paid upfront leave a rating every ~32 installs, while users of free ad-supported apps need ~198 installs per rating. Skin in the game makes people talk. A second, quieter pattern: within both free and freemium apps, the ad-supported variant runs a higher ratio than the ad-free one — ads correlate with more passive, lower-intent audiences that rate less per install.

The prompt effect

Better-rated apps also collect ratings faster

You might expect angry users to rate more. At market scale, the opposite shows up: apps rated 4.5★+ collect one rating per ~92 installs, while apps under 3.5★ need ~270 — nearly a 3× gap, monotonic across the bands. The likeliest mechanism isn't that happiness makes people chatty; it's the in-app rating prompt. Apps that ask for a rating at the right moment harvest more ratings and steer happy users to the store — volume and score rise together. The teams that never ask get rated only by the users with the strongest (often negative) motivation.

Using the table

Turning a rating count into a download ballpark

The honest recipe: take a competitor's total rating count, multiply by the median installs-per-rating of its category, and read the result as a lifetime order-of-magnitude — not a precise figure. Two worked examples from the August 3, 2026 table:

  • A Finance app with 4,000 ratings: 4,000 × 89 ≈ ~356,000 lifetime installs — consistent with a store listing showing "100,000+" or "500,000+".
  • An Educational game with the same 4,000 ratings: 4,000 × 472 ≈ ~1.9M lifetime installs. Same rating count, roughly five times the audience — this is why the category column matters more than the store-wide 155.

Know the failure modes before you lean on it: it breaks below ~10K installs (solicited ratings), it under-counts apps that never prompt, and it's a lifetime figure — it says nothing about whether those downloads happened last month or in 2019. Methodology

How these numbers were made

  • Universe: every Google Play app in our tracked catalog (2.5M+ Google Play apps) that clears the floors — ≥1,000 lifetime installs, ≥100 ratings, and a store category. 252,554 apps qualified; latest snapshot row per app, taken August 3, 2026.
  • The metric: lifetime installs ÷ lifetime rating count, computed per app, then aggregated as the median (interpolated percentile) — never the mean, which the long tail would drag upward.
  • Install counts are bracket floors. Google Play reports installs as brackets ("500,000+"); we use the bracket floor, so each app's true ratio is equal to or somewhat higher than measured. Medians across thousands of apps smooth this quantization but don't remove it — treat the table as conservative.
  • Ratings, not written reviews. The denominator is the total star-rating count, which includes ratings without text. Written-review counts are far smaller and would produce much larger ratios.
  • Floors and drops: below 1,000 installs or 100 ratings the ratio is dominated by noise and solicited ratings, so those apps are excluded; categories with fewer than 300 qualifying apps are dropped, leaving 47.
  • Scope: Google Play, worldwide install and rating totals, August 3, 2026 snapshot; the underlying dataset updates daily. Apple publishes no install counts, so an equivalent direct measurement doesn't exist for the App Store — treat cross-store transfers of these numbers as directional only.
