How often app names repeat
We counted exact name matches across GetAppNiche's catalog on October 20, 2026. The two stores could hardly be more different. On the App Store, 0.8% of apps share their exact name with another app. On Google Play it's 9.0%, and generic names repeat by the hundred.

GetAppNiche catalog, October 20, 2026: 1.1M+ App Store and 2.5M+ Google Play apps. Exact match after ignoring case.
| Exact app name | App Store apps | Google Play apps |
|---|---|---|
| Calculator | 3 | 390 |
| Sudoku | 1 | 266 |
| Flashlight | 0 | 191 |
| Notes | 1 | 110 |
| Compass | 2 | 103 |
| Solitaire | 7 | 98 |
| Habit Tracker | 4 | 77 |
| Weather | 1 | 66 |
Both stores already list apps that share a name, but sharing one costs you. Searches for your name return someone else's app, reviews and support emails meant for another developer find you, and a generic name gives you nothing to rank for that others don't already own.
How to pick an app name, from what top apps do
In our study of the US Top Grossing charts, the top 10 apps in each App Store category have a median name of 28 characters, against 17 for other active apps, and 69% of them use a "Brand: keyword" name. On Google Play, 59% of top-10 apps do. Put together:
- Start with a short, ownable brand. One or two words that aren't a plain description of the category. "Calculator" can never be yours; a word you coin can.
- Add the main thing the app does after a colon or dash. "YourBrand: Habit Tracker" gives search a phrase to match and tells people what they're installing.
- Stay within 30 characters. Both stores cut the name field at 30. On the App Store, the subtitle gives you another 30 for a second phrase.
- Check both stores. A name that's free on the App Store may already be crowded on Google Play. The checker above searches both.
- Check the keyword, then the trademark. See who ranks for your main phrase in the free App Store keyword tool, then search the USPTO or TMview for the brand.

App name FAQ
How do I check if an app name is taken?
Type the name into the checker on this page. It searches the App Store and Google Play for the name and reads the top 10 results on each, flagging any app whose name is the same, or whose brand before a colon or dash is the same. It's free and needs no account.
Can two apps have the same name?
Yes, on both stores, but far more often on Google Play. In GetAppNiche's catalog on October 20, 2026, 9.0% of Google Play apps share their exact name with another app, and 390 are called just "Calculator". On the App Store it's 0.8%, and no name is used by more than 7 apps.
How long can an app name be?
30 characters on both stores. Apple's App Store Connect allows an app name of 2 to 30 characters, plus a 30-character subtitle; Google Play Console allows a 30-character app name.
Should I put a keyword in my app name?
Most top apps do. In GetAppNiche's study of the US Top Grossing charts, 69% of the top 10 apps in each App Store category use a "Brand: keyword" style name, against 23% of other active apps. A short brand plus the main thing the app does fits in 30 characters and gives search a word to match.
Does this tool check trademarks?
No. It shows what's on the stores, not what's registered. Before you commit to a name, search the trademark office where you'll sell, such as the USPTO in the US or the EUIPO in the EU, and talk to a lawyer if the name matters to your business.
