What is a good rating on Google Play?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the 258,381 with 100+ ratings have a median of 4.25, and a good rating (the top quarter) starts at 4.58, which Google Play shows as 4.6. Below 3.75, an app is in the bottom quarter. Most listings never get that far: only 14.25% show a star rating at all.

Ratings here are the star rating shown on each app's US Google Play listing: measured public data, not estimates. Benchmarks use apps with 100+ ratings, counted with Google's worldwide number of ratings (the same on every country's listing), so an app's US star rating can rest on fewer US ratings. GetAppNiche, 2,607,536 Google Play apps on the US store, listings read Sep 6–29, 2026. The last column is the same split for all 371,698 listings that show a star rating. Ratings are the star rating shown on the US listing (Google weights it towards recent ratings); the number of ratings is Google's worldwide count.

What this means for you: a 4.0 is not a strong rating on Google Play. A 4.00 rates higher than only 34.20% of apps with 100+ ratings, while 65.80% sit at 4.00 or above. If you want your listing to stand out, aim for a score of 4.58 or higher, which Google Play shows as 4.6.

The benchmarks

Which Google Play ratings count as good, average or low?

Among the 258,381 Google Play apps with 100+ ratings that GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 29, 2026), a rating of 4.58 or more puts an app in the top quarter and 4.79 or more in the top 10%. Google Play shows one decimal, so the table gives both.

Rating benchmarks, Google Play apps with 100+ ratings (US store, Sep 29, 2026)
Benchmark Rating (2 decimals) Shows on Google Play as Apps at or above
Bottom 10% below this (10th percentile) 3.10 3.1 90.07%
Bottom quarter below this (25th percentile) 3.75 3.7 or 3.8 75.19%
Median: half of apps rate higher 4.25 4.2 or 4.3 50.59%
Top quarter starts: a good rating (75th percentile) 4.58 4.6 25.11%
Top 10% starts: an excellent rating (90th percentile) 4.79 4.8 10.11%

Percentiles are nearest-rank. A score ending in 5 (for example 4.25) can display either way, so both displayed values are given.

The store shows one decimal, rounded; a score that ends in 5 may show on either side, so read these shares as close approximations.

What this means for you: small gains at the top matter. Moving your listing from 4.3 to 4.5 takes you from ahead of about 49% of established apps to ahead of about 64%; each 0.1 step from 4.0 to 4.8 passes another 5–8% of them.

By category

What is a good Google Play rating in each category?

Among the Google Play apps with 100+ ratings that GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 29, 2026), Books & Reference has the highest median (4.60) and its top quarter starts at 4.81; Dating has the lowest median (3.92), with the top quarter from 4.27. The bar moves a lot by category: in 28 of the 48 categories the median is below the overall median of 4.25 (apps with 100+ ratings), and in 20 it is above.

GetAppNiche, 2,607,536 Google Play apps on the US store, listings read Sep 6–29, 2026. Every category has at least 301 apps with 100+ ratings. "Sports" is one label shared by an app category and a game category.

What this means for you: judge your rating against your own category, not the overall benchmark. The overall median of 4.25 (apps with 100+ ratings) is above the median in Dating, Maps & Navigation and House & Home, but below it in Books & Reference, Word and Personalization. The "Good from" column is the number your listing needs to reach the top quarter of its category.

By size and pay model

Do bigger or paid Google Play apps have better ratings?

Not by much. Among the Google Play apps with 100+ ratings that GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 29, 2026), the median runs from 4.19 (100,000–999,999 installs) to 4.33 (10,000,000 or more installs) for apps with 10,000 installs or more.

Install counts are Google Play's public install ranges (the 'Downloads' label on the listing), lower bounds of worldwide lifetime installs. Under 10,000 installs is a selection effect: an app that collected 100+ ratings with so few installs is unusual, so this row describes those 11,926 apps, not small apps in general.

What this means for you: benchmark against your category first. Medians differ far more between categories (3.92 to 4.60) than between pay models (4.21 to 4.35), and games and non-game apps share a median of 4.25. The paid figure covers only 7,006 paid apps with 100+ ratings. How Google Play apps charge is broken down in free vs paid Android apps.

Google Play vs App Store

Is a good Google Play rating the same as a good App Store rating?

No. In GetAppNiche's data, with the same rule (100+ ratings, top quarter = good), Google Play ratings run lower. On the App Store (GetAppNiche's iOS catalog of 744,874 apps, Jul 7, 2026) the median is 4.63 and the top quarter starts at 4.77; on Google Play (US listing, Sep 29, 2026) they are 4.25 and 4.58.

Different stores and dates (iOS Jul 7, Google Play Sep 29, 2026). On Google Play the 100+ is Google's worldwide count of ratings and the star rating is the one shown on the US listing, weighted towards recent ratings. Both rows are GetAppNiche's own snapshots.

What this means for you: don't carry an App Store benchmark over to Google Play. A 4.5 sits below the App Store median (4.63) but above the Google Play median (4.25). For the iOS side, see what is a good App Store rating.

FAQ

Google Play ratings: quick answers

What is the average rating on Google Play?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the 258,381 with 100+ ratings (Google's worldwide count) have a median US star rating of 4.25 (their mean is 4.08). Across all 371,698 listings that show a star rating, the median is 4.23 (mean 4.04). The median is the better "average" here, because a long tail of low ratings pulls the mean down.

Is 4.0 a good rating on Google Play?

It is below the middle. Among the 258,381 Google Play apps with 100+ ratings that GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 29, 2026), a listing that shows 4.0 rates higher than about 33% of them, and the median is 4.25. In 4 of 48 categories (Business, House & Home, Maps & Navigation and Dating) the median is 4.00 or lower, so there a 4.0 is typical or better.

Is 4.5 a good Google Play rating?

Almost: a 4.5 is above the median (4.25) but just short of the top quarter, where a good rating starts (4.58, which shows as 4.6). Among the 258,381 Google Play apps with 100+ ratings that GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 29, 2026), a listing that shows 4.5 rates higher than about 64% of them. In Books & Reference (median 4.60) a 4.5 is below the category median; in Word (median 4.52) it is about average.

How is the Google Play rating calculated?

Google's Play Console Help says the rating users see on Google Play is weighted towards more recent ratings, so it reflects the app's current quality rather than a lifetime average; the number of ratings shown is the lifetime total. The rating is also specific to the user's country and device type, while the number of ratings was the same on every country's listing we checked. The benchmarks on this page use the rating shown on the US listing, among apps with 100+ ratings.

Why is my Google Play rating different in another country or on a tablet?

Because Google Play shows country- and device-specific ratings. The Android Developers Blog announced in 2021 that from November 2021 phone users see ratings specific to the country they are registered in, and that from early 2022 tablets, Chromebooks and wearables show ratings specific to that device type. The same app can therefore show a different rating in each country and on each kind of device; the number of ratings shown stays the same in every country we checked. The benchmarks on this page use the rating shown on the US listing.

Why does my app show no star rating on Google Play yet?

You are in the majority. Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), 85.75% show no star rating. Google publishes no public minimum number of ratings; in our data the smallest rating count shown with a score was 5, an observation, not a rule. Stars become common with scale: 2.92% of listings with 100–999 installs show a rating, against 36.72% at 10,000–99,999 and 94.77% at 1,000,000–9,999,999.

Does replying to reviews raise a Google Play rating?

It can. Google's Play Console page on ratings says that responding to a negative review can increase that rating by an average of +0.7. That is the rating on the review you answered, once the user updates it; Google gives no figure for the app's overall rating. Because the rating Google Play shows is weighted towards recent ratings, recent changes count for more.
