App Ideas for 2026: 30 Niches Where Apps Make Money
30 app ideas ranked by App Store data: in the best niches up to 21% of apps make $1,000+/month, vs 3.3% store-wide. Plus where new apps still break in.
The best app ideas for 2026 aren’t new inventions. They’re niches where apps already make money. We checked 100 common app ideas against GetAppNiche’s App Store data and ranked them by one number: the share of apps in the niche that make $1,000 or more a month. In the top 30, that share runs from 9.8% to 21%. Across the whole App Store it’s 3.3%. Every idea below beats that App Store rate at least 2.9 times over, and you can see it before you’ve written a line of code.
The ten best app ideas by that measure, as of October 20, 2026:

GetAppNiche App Store catalog, October 20, 2026. A niche = apps with the phrase in their App Store name.
A niche here is simple: every app whose App Store name contains the phrase. “Video editor” means the 466 apps with “video editor” in their name. That’s the same thing a user sees when they search for it, and it keeps the numbers easy to check.

The table is sorted by the share column. The other columns are raw counts, so you can see how big each niche is: 1,561 solitaire apps is a very different fight from 93 fasting trackers, even at similar odds.

App Store, October 20, 2026. Revenue from GetAppNiche's revenue model; App Store purchases and subscriptions only.
Three things stand out. Health tracking is everywhere on the list: blood pressure, blood sugar, fasting, sleep, steps, periods and pregnancy all make it. Utility apps that do one job well, like flight trackers, mileage trackers and PDF scanners, beat most “big idea” apps. And games aren’t off-limits for a small team: solitaire and crossword apps make the cut, though solitaire has 1,561 apps to get past.
Where a new app can still break in
A niche full of money can still be closed to newcomers if the same five apps take all of it. So we also counted apps released in the last 12 months that already make $1,000 or more a month. Across the App Store, 3.2% of new apps get there. In these niches, at least five new apps did:
| App idea | Share | New apps, last 12 months | Already make $1k+/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solitaire | 18% | 289 | 51 |
| Photo editor | 12% | 163 | 20 |
| Couples app | 7.4% | 242 | 18 |
| Video editor | 16% | 80 | 13 |
| Calorie counter | 7.9% | 165 | 13 |
| Period tracker | 9.4% | 106 | 10 |
| Fishing | 5.8% | 172 | 10 |
| Bible study | 14% | 56 | 8 |
| Blood sugar tracker | 29% | 24 | 7 |
| Sleep tracker | 11% | 66 | 7 |
| Calisthenics | 19% | 31 | 6 |
| Language learning | 10% | 49 | 5 |
| Blood pressure tracker | 10% | 49 | 5 |
| Coin identifier | 8.8% | 57 | 5 |
| Step counter | 7.9% | 63 | 5 |
| Budget planner | 7.9% | 63 | 5 |
| PDF scanner | 4.7% | 107 | 5 |
Blood sugar trackers are the surprise: of 24 apps released in the past year, 7 already make $1,000+ a month, 9.0× the App Store rate for new apps. Calisthenics is similar on a smaller scale. Calorie counters and couples apps are the opposite shape: lots of new apps every year, and a steady trickle of them making it.
Where the leaders look beatable
The easiest niche to enter is one where the apps people already use are letting them down. We call an app established once it has 500 ratings, and weak if it’s rated under 4.0 or hasn’t shipped an update in a year. Across the App Store, 29% of established apps are weak by that test. In these niches the share is higher:
- Sleep sounds: 23 of 43 established apps are weak (53%)
- Photo editor: 63 of 169 established apps are weak (37%)
- Math solver: 6 of 18 established apps are weak (33%)
- Fishing: 27 of 83 established apps are weak (33%)
- Bible study: 4 of 13 established apps are weak (31%)
Sleep sounds is the clearest case. More than half of its established apps are either poorly rated or abandoned, and 15% of all sleep sound apps still make $1,000+ a month. People keep paying for something they don’t love. That’s the gap a better app walks into.
App ideas that look popular but rarely pay
Some ideas are popular with builders and not with buyers. These are the crowded ones from our 100 where few apps make money:
| App idea | Share | Apps with it in the name | Make $1k+/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Habit tracker | 5.8% | 827 | 48 |
| Expense tracker | 4.6% | 474 | 22 |
| Flashcards | 2.9% | 1,114 | 32 |
| Pomodoro timer | 2.8% | 362 | 10 |
| Yoga | 2.4% | 1,942 | 46 |
| Pilates | 1.8% | 1,767 | 31 |
| Golf | 2.5% | 4,142 | 105 |
| Sudoku | 4.6% | 891 | 41 |
| Parking | 2.9% | 1,132 | 33 |
| Quit smoking | 3.9% | 181 | 7 |
The habit tracker is the classic first app, and the numbers show it: 827 apps, 5.8% of them making $1,000 a month. That doesn’t mean you can’t win there. It means “a habit tracker” isn’t an idea yet. “A habit tracker for people in recovery” might be, and that’s a niche you can check the same way.
How to turn one of these into your app idea
A row in a table isn’t an app yet. Here’s how to get from one to the other.
- Pick a niche where money is proven. Start from the 30 above, or check your own phrase the same way. You want a niche where roughly one app in ten, or more, makes $1,000 a month.
- Narrow it to one person. “Video editor” is a market. “Caption editor for real estate agents’ Reels” is an app. The narrower version is easier to build and easier to rank for.
- Read the leaders’ 1- and 2-star reviews. The complaints that repeat are your feature list. If the top apps are weak by our test, the reviews will say why.
- Check that people search for your words. Look up the phrases your users would type in our free App Store keyword tool, which shows who ranks for any keyword on both stores.
- Size the prize. Check what the top apps in the niche make with the free app revenue checker before you commit months to building.
- Test before you build. A landing page or a TestFlight beta tells you more than another week of planning. Our guide to validating an app idea has the steps.

How we built this list
We started from 100 app ideas indie developers commonly build or ask about, from habit trackers to coin identifiers. For each phrase we took every app in GetAppNiche’s App Store catalog with that phrase in its name, using the October 20, 2026 snapshot of 1,114,726 iOS apps.
- Makes $1,000+ a month means GetAppNiche’s revenue model puts the app’s monthly App Store revenue at $1,000 or more. The model reads public App Store signals every day. It counts in-app purchases and subscriptions; ad income and payments taken outside the App Store aren’t visible to it, so ad-funded apps are undercounted.
- The list of 30 keeps only niches with at least 50 apps and 5 apps making $1,000 a month, so one lucky app can’t put a tiny niche at the top.
- Name matching has limits. An app that calls itself “Clip Studio” won’t count as a video editor, and one app can sit in two niches. Treat the numbers as a fair comparison between ideas, not a census.
- App Store only. This list uses App Store data. GetAppNiche covers Google Play too; the explore view in the app filters both stores.
How the numbers inside the app are produced, and what they can and can’t tell you, is covered in our data and estimates docs. Plans start at $39/month.
