Best Low-Competition App Niches in 2026 (Real iOS Data)
Data-backed low-competition app niches for 2026: category competition floors from 746,534 iOS apps, plus five real search-query niches from our weekly scan.
Most lists of low-competition app niches are vibes: someone’s hunch dressed up as advice. This page is different — every number below comes from a dataset of 746,534 iOS apps, and “low competition” has a concrete definition: few entrenched incumbents, measured by how many ratings the money-making apps in a niche have accumulated. An app with 4,000 ratings can be out-executed; an app with 200,000 ratings owns its search results.
You get two data cuts here. First, the category-level competition floor: which App Store categories let indie apps earn without fighting review-heavy giants. Second, five real search-query niches pulled from our latest weekly scan, with estimated revenue and 30-day growth for each. If you want the repeatable research process rather than the current numbers, that lives in our guide to finding profitable iOS app niches — this page is its data companion: where the numbers actually point in July 2026.
Methodology, briefly and honestly
We analyzed 746,534 iOS apps (data: July 7, 2026, refreshed daily). From those we isolated the “indie band” — apps earning an estimated $3,000–$150,000/month, the range a solo developer or small team realistically targets. Our competition proxy is the median rating count of those indie-band apps per category: fewer accumulated ratings means the incumbents you’d compete against are less entrenched.
Two limits worth stating plainly. All revenue figures are labeled estimates generated by GetAppNiche’s proprietary model — nobody outside Apple has reported per-app revenue. And rating count is a proxy, not a guarantee: it tells you how dug-in the winners are, not whether users want another app. Niches also shift; this is a snapshot, not a prophecy.
Where indie apps face the least entrenched competition
The twelve categories where indie-band apps hold the lowest median rating counts, from 746,534 apps analyzed (July 7, 2026):
| Category | Indie apps earning $3k–$150k/mo (est.) | Median est. revenue | Median rating count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utilities | 1,155 | $8,357/mo | 4,196 |
| Graphics & Design | 262 | $9,643/mo | 4,532 |
| Reference | 297 | $10,179/mo | 4,785 |
| Sports | 282 | $9,643/mo | 5,072 |
| Health & Fitness | 975 | $9,000/mo | 5,365 |
| Navigation | 202 | $8,193/mo | 5,706 |
| Music | 391 | $10,273/mo | 5,732 |
| Education | 825 | $9,000/mo | 5,775 |
| Productivity | 665 | $9,214/mo | 6,200 |
| Book | 178 | $10,179/mo | 6,296 |
| Social Networking | 321 | $9,107/mo | 6,822 |
| Entertainment | 685 | $9,857/mo | 7,311 |
How to read this: Utilities, Graphics & Design, and Reference have the lowest competition floor — the typical indie app earning real money there did it with under 5,000 ratings. Utilities is doubly interesting because it combines the lowest floor with the largest indie population (1,155 apps in the band): plenty of room, plenty of proof it works. For contrast, Games — absent from this table — has a median of 22,642 ratings among its indie-band apps, four to five times the bar of the categories at the top. Indie games earn more when they win (median $13,661/mo estimated), but the typical winner had to accumulate a small city of reviews to get there.
Finance is the other instructive outlier: 1,006 indie-band apps, so the money is clearly there, yet a median rating count of 10,743. Users pay in Finance, but they pay entrenched incumbents — enter with a sharp wedge or not at all.
Five real niches from our latest weekly scan (July 6, 2026)
Categories are too coarse to build in, so our weekly scan works at the level users actually search. A niche here is a real App Store search query: candidates come from the titles of indie-band apps, we check the top-25 App Store search results for each query and count how many clear an estimated $1,000/month, then filter out queries dominated by big brands or entrenched incumbents. Five from the latest issue:
| Niche (search query) | Top-25 apps clearing $1k/mo (est.) | Median est. revenue | 30-day growth (median) |
|---|---|---|---|
| “card scanner” | 18 of 25 | $97,821/mo | +9.6% |
| “ranked gym” | 7 of 25 | $46,929/mo | +5.7% |
| “screen time control” | 17 of 25 | $66,643/mo | +6.9% |
| “esim travel” | 12 of 25 | $14,089/mo | +7.3% |
| “logic puzzle” | 12 of 25 | $11,786/mo | +0.9% |
Each row tells a different story. “Card scanner” is the hottest: 18 of the top 25 results monetize, and the standout — Sports Card Scanner: Spoly — grew an estimated +245% in 30 days, the kind of spike that signals a wave still forming. “Ranked gym” is the opposite shape: only 7 of 25 results clear $1k/mo, which means a thin results page — those seven earn well (median $46,929/mo estimated) and there is visible room beside them. “Screen time control” is a dense, proven market riding platform-level demand; “esim travel” monetizes more modestly but keeps growing with travel itself; and “logic puzzle” is the evergreen — nearly flat growth (+0.9%), but half the results page earns, year in, year out.

How to vet a niche yourself in 30 minutes
Don’t take any table’s word for it, including ours. Free tools cover the whole check:
- Search the query in the free revenue checker. Type the niche query at getappniche.com/top-grossing-ios-apps — free — and scan the estimated revenue of the top results.
- Count who’s earning. How many of the visible apps clear an estimated $1k/month? A page where many apps monetize beats one giant plus dead weight — spread revenue means the market pays the category, not one brand.
- Score two or three keywords. Run the query and its variants through the free App Store keyword tool to see whether the demand is winnable or already locked up.
- Check who you’d be fighting. Open the developers behind the top apps. Solo devs and two-app studios are beatable; a results page of funded portfolio companies is not.
- Decide against the base rate. Only 3.2% of iOS apps clear $1k/month in estimated revenue — but freemium apps do it at 13.76%. A good niche plus a freemium model is how you move your odds, not either one alone.
Honest caveats
- Estimates, always. Every revenue figure on this page is generated by GetAppNiche’s proprietary multi-signal model. Use it to rank opportunities, never as a forecast.
- The proxy can mislead. A low median rating count usually means less entrenched competition — but in a tiny market it just means nobody showed up. Always pair it with revenue evidence, as both tables above do.
- Snapshots expire. A niche growing +245% in 30 days is also a niche every reader of this page just saw. Data from July 7, 2026 describes July 2026.
- iOS only. Everything here is App Store data; none of it says anything about Google Play.
- Medians hide spread. “Median $97,821/mo” does not mean the 25th app earns that — check the specific apps before you commit.
