How many languages do iOS apps support?

The median iOS app supports exactly 1 language — but apps earning an estimated $10,000+/month support a median of 5. Across the 730,024 App Store apps with supported-language metadata in our July 7, 2026 snapshot (of 744,874 tracked iOS apps), 68.6% ship in a single language. Yet half of the top estimated-revenue tier (50.7%) ships in 5+ languages, versus 14.7% of apps with no revenue signal. The localization gradient is one of the cleanest monotonic patterns in our dataset: every step up the estimated-revenue ladder, median languages rise and the single-language share falls.

Like our app-size figures, the language counts on this page are exact, not estimates: they come from the supported-languages field in each app's public App Store listing. Three honest caveats: the metadata measures breadth, not quality — a listing can declare languages with shallow translations; the revenue tiers we cross languages against are estimates modeled from public signals; and 14,850 of our 744,874 tracked apps lack language metadata and are excluded (744,874 − 730,024). How to read this table

Three things the localization gradient reveals

  • Most of the store never tries to travel. 68.6% of all apps ship in one language, and among apps with no revenue signal it's 70.1%. The typical App Store app is written once, in one language, for one market — which means a localized listing is automatically doing something roughly two thirds of the store doesn't.
  • The earners cluster at a handful, not at forty. The estimated $10k+/month tier has a median of 5 languages — five times the store-wide median of 1 — and 50.7% of that tier ships in 5+. The observable gap between the no-revenue population and the earners is the move from 1 language to a small handful: single-language share falls from 70.1% to 38.7% as estimated revenue rises, while the 5+-language share climbs from 14.7% to 50.7%.
  • Correlation, not causation — in both directions. Localization opens new markets, and revenue funds localization; both are plausibly true at once. Successful apps can afford translators, and translating an app nobody wants will not rescue it. What the data rules out is the comfortable assumption that localization doesn't matter: the pattern is monotonic at every tier, with no exceptions. What to localize first

Our dataset can tell you that earners ship in more languages; it cannot tell you which language will pay for itself in your niche, and we won't invent per-language revenue figures we don't have. What we can offer is the standard cost-ordered method. Localization isn't all-or-nothing — it's a ladder, and the first rungs are nearly free:

  • 1. Metadata and keywords first. App Store keyword indexing differs by locale, so localizing your keyword field and app name for a few target locales is the cheapest possible test — no code changes, no translators for the app itself. Research which terms people actually search in each locale with our free App Store keyword tool.
  • 2. Then the store listing. Description, screenshots, and promotional text. A user who finds you via a localized keyword still has to be convinced by a page they can read.
  • 3. Then the app UI. The expensive rung — strings, layouts, support. Do it for the locales where the first two rungs showed real traction, not speculatively for forty languages.

This ordering is also the honest reading of the metadata caveat above: because supported-language counts measure declared breadth, some of the multilingual earners in our table are surely on rung 1 or 2 themselves.
