Answer · data from 744,874 iOS apps
The most profitable app categories in 2026
Games — by odds, and it isn't close. Across the 744,874 iOS App Store apps we track (July 7, 2026), 15.73% of games clear an estimated $1,000/month — roughly 5× the store-wide baseline of 3.2% — and 7.23% clear an estimated $10,000/month. This page ranks all 26 categories by that measure: the probability that an app in the category makes money, not the dollar amounts winners make. Those are a different ranking with different leaders — the amounts side (median, p75, p90 per category) is in average app revenue by category.
Every dollar figure on this page is a labeled estimate generated by GetAppNiche's proprietary multi-signal model — never audited revenue. Data snapshot: July 7, 2026; the dataset is updated daily. Check any specific app free — with the app revenue checker.
The ranking
26 App Store categories, ranked by odds of clearing est. $1,000/month
Percentages are shares of all apps in the category — non-earners included — so they read as odds. "Any est. revenue" means the app shows enough public signal to carry a revenue estimate at all (7.4% of the store overall). The p90 column is the ceiling: what the top 10% of earning apps in the category clear, in estimated $/month.

Odds and ceiling are different rankings
"Profitable" hides two separate questions: how likely is an app in this category to make money, and how big can it get if it does? The table's #5 category by odds has one of the lowest ceilings on the store, and two middling-odds categories have among the highest. Crossing the two axes gives the map that matters:
- High odds, high ceiling: Games. The only category that wins both ways — 15.73% clear an estimated $1k/month AND the p90 earner clears an estimated $69,771/month, nearly triple the next category. The price of entry is the heaviest incumbent competition we measure (more below).
- High odds, low ceiling: Finance and Weather. Finance ranks #5 by odds (5.48% clear est. $1k/month) yet its p90 — an estimated $8,464/month — is fourth-lowest on the store. Weather is the same shape: #2 odds (10.67%), modest est. $12,214 p90. Many apps clear the bar; few go big. These are the "steady income, rarely a rocket" categories.
- Low odds, high ceiling: Entertainment, Social Networking, Shopping. The mirror image — Shopping's odds are a middling 2.57%, but its p90 earner clears an estimated $24,429/month; Entertainment (4.22% / est. $26,529) and Social Networking (3.43% / est. $25,071) follow the same lottery-ticket pattern. Most entrants make nothing; the winners get fat tails.
- Low odds, low ceiling: the quadrant to avoid. Magazines & Newspapers (1.68% / est. $5,786 p90), Developer Tools (1.63% / est. $6,381), Food & Drink (1.76% / est. $9,857) — and Stickers, which is statistically dead: 0.05% of 4,417 packs clear an estimated $1k/month, none clear $10k, and the p90 earner makes an estimated $900/month.
How to read this ranking
Three things the odds table reveals
- The biggest categories are the worst bets. Business is the largest category on the App Store — 95,001 apps — and only 0.91% clear an estimated $1,000/month, dead last among real categories. Education is #2 by size (84,961 apps) and #21 by odds (1.80%). A crowded category tells you where developers went, not where the money is.
- Weather is the best-kept secret. The #2 odds on the entire store — 10.67% clear an estimated $1k/month, 3× the baseline — from a category of just 3,084 apps. Small surface, unusually high hit rate, modest ceiling: the profile of a category where utility is obvious and willingness to pay is proven.
- Games' odds come with an asterisk. Best odds on the store, but Games winners also carry the heaviest incumbent mass we've measured — the apps already earning in Games are bigger and spend more than incumbents anywhere else. Category-level odds average over sub-niches with wildly different crowding, so pick at the niche level, not the category level — that analysis is in the best low-competition app niches for 2026.
This page answers "what are my odds?" FAQ
Most profitable app categories — quick answers
What is the most profitable app category?
Games — and by odds, it isn't close. Across 744,874 iOS apps we analyzed (July 7, 2026), 15.73% of the 27,317 games clear an estimated $1,000/month, roughly 5× the store-wide baseline of 3.2%, and 7.23% clear an estimated $10,000/month. The dollar amounts back this up: the top 10% of earning games make an estimated $69,771+/month, and the median earning game makes an estimated $2,250/month — more than triple the store-wide $643 median. No other category leads on both the odds and the amounts. The trade-off is competition: Games winners also sit behind the heaviest incumbent mass we measure.
Which app categories are hardest to make money in?
Stickers is statistically dead: of 4,417 sticker packs, 0.05% clear an estimated $1,000/month and 0.00% clear an estimated $10,000/month. Above that floor, the hardest mainstream categories are Business (0.91% of 95,001 apps clear an estimated $1k/month), Developer Tools (1.63%), Magazines & Newspapers (1.68%), Food & Drink (1.76%), and Education (1.80% of 84,961 apps). Note the pattern: Business and Education are the two biggest categories on the App Store and two of the worst bets — a crowded category signals where developers go, not where money is.
Is the Games category too competitive for indie developers?
Both facts are true and worth holding at once. Games has the best odds on the store: 15.73% clear an estimated $1,000/month and 7.23% clear an estimated $10,000/month, against store baselines of 3.2% and well under 1%. But Games winners also carry the heaviest incumbent concentration we measure — the studios above you are bigger, better funded, and spend more on acquisition than in any other category. The honest read for an indie: the category-level odds are real, but they average over sub-niches with very different competitive profiles, so the useful unit of analysis is the niche, not the category. Our low-competition niche analysis breaks down where odds and crowding actually balance.
Which small app category is surprisingly profitable?
Weather. It is one of the smallest categories on the App Store — just 3,084 apps in our July 7, 2026 snapshot of 744,874 iOS apps — yet 10.67% clear an estimated $1,000/month, the second-best rate on the entire store, behind only Games and roughly 3× the 3.2% store baseline. 20.2% of weather apps show some estimated revenue at all, and 2.40% clear an estimated $10,000/month. The ceiling is modest (the top 10% of earners make an estimated $12,214+/month), so Weather is a high-floor, medium-ceiling category: unusually good odds of a real income, rarely a giant one.
How were these percentages calculated?
Each percentage is the share of apps in a category whose estimated monthly revenue clears a threshold ($1,000/month or $10,000/month), computed across all 744,874 iOS App Store apps in our July 7, 2026 snapshot — non-earners included, which is what makes it an odds figure. Revenue is generated by GetAppNiche's proprietary multi-signal model, never audited numbers; Apple does not publish per-app revenue, so no third party has exact figures. Categories are as listed on the App Store by the developer. The dataset is updated daily, and every dollar figure on this page is an estimate.
