How to Launch an App in 2026: What Year-One Winners Do

How to launch an app, from data on 216,902 new iOS apps: the 3.2% that reach $1,000/month mostly charge inside the app, update monthly and collect ratings early.

Published October 21, 2026 · by GetAppNiche

To launch an app that makes money, plan the money before the launch. We looked at all 216,902 iOS apps released in the year to October 20, 2026. Only 3.2% of them make $1,000 or more a month. Those that do share three habits: they charge inside the app, they keep shipping updates, and they collect ratings from the start. Below is the data, then a launch checklist built on it.

None of this proves that adding a subscription or shipping an update makes an app successful. Apps that earn have more reason to keep improving. But it’s a clear picture of what the winners look like a year in, and every one of those habits is something you can plan for before launch.

Pick a business model before you launch

The model decides your odds more than anything else you choose on launch day:

New iOS apps making $1,000+ a month, by business model
Subscription 10% Freemium (one-time purchases) 7.6% Paid upfront 1.4%

iOS apps released in the year to October 20, 2026. GetAppNiche data; App Store purchases and subscriptions only.

Subscription apps that launched last year reach $1,000 a month 10% of the time; paid-upfront apps get there 1.4% of the time. Decide what people pay for, and when, before you write the onboarding; it’s much easier to design the paywall in than to bolt it on later. Launch where new apps still break in

Some categories are far friendlier to newcomers than others:

Your app launch checklist

Before launch

  1. Validate the niche. Make sure apps like yours already make money. Our guide to validating an app idea has the steps.
  2. Design the paywall in. Pick subscription or one-time purchases and build the moment you ask for money into the first session, not version 2.0.
  3. Write your store listing for search. Use most of the 30-character name, put your main keyword after the brand, and fill the subtitle and keyword field. Check who ranks for your keywords in the free App Store keyword tool and whether your name is taken with the app name checker.
  4. Prepare screenshots that sell. Top apps use more of their screenshot slots than the average app and change them more often.

Launch week

  1. Ask for ratings early, in the right moment. The median new app that earns has 75 ratings; the median of the rest has 0. Ask after a success moment in the app, not on first open.
  2. Tell the people who already wanted it. Your waitlist, the communities where you validated the idea and the subreddits or forums where your users ask for it.

The first 90 days

  1. Ship updates every few weeks. 61% of new apps that make money were updated in the last 30 days, against 28% of the rest.
  2. Track your keywords and fix the listing. Watch where you rank for each keyword and change the name, subtitle or screenshots when a keyword stalls. GetAppNiche’s app ranking tracker checks positions daily on both stores.
  3. Read your reviews and your competitors’. The complaints that repeat are your next update.

About the data

Every iOS app in GetAppNiche’s App Store catalog released in the 365 days before October 20, 2026: 216,902 apps. Revenue covers App Store purchases and subscriptions, not ads. Categories with fewer than 1,500 new apps are left out of the table.
