What this means for you

  • 1,000 installs is already above the typical app. 60.98% of the Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store show fewer than 1,000, so a first thousand is a real signal, not a rounding error.
  • The milestones are steep: 10K+ puts an app in the top 19.53% of the apps GetAppNiche read, 100K+ in the top 7.78% and 1M+ in the top 2.46%.
  • Read a competitor's range as a band. An app showing 10K+ can have anywhere from 10,000 to 49,999 lifetime installs, so two apps with the same label can be 39,999 installs apart.

Games vs apps

Do games get more installs than other Android apps?

Yes, by a wide margin. Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the median game shows 1K+ (1,000–4,999) installs, against 100+ (100–499) for non-game apps, and 7.89% of games show 1,000,000 or more against 1.71% of non-game apps.

Each bar splits the group's apps into install bands; labels are whole percent. The table below gives the share at or above each level, so each band is the difference between two of its columns. Google Play uses the label 'Sports' for both an app category and a game category; the data cannot split them, so game counts are a range. What this means for you

  • Benchmark a game against games. 10,000 or more installs puts a game in the top 34.15% of the games GetAppNiche read, but a non-game app in the top 17.51% of non-game apps.
  • For a non-game app, the first thousand already beats most of the field. A non-game app showing 1K+ (1,000–4,999) installs is ahead of the 62.69% of non-game apps that show less.

By pay model

Do free or paid Android apps get more installs?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), free apps with in-app purchases show the largest install ranges: their median is 1K+ (1,000–4,999) and 9.91% show 1,000,000 or more. Apps that charge upfront sit lowest, with a median of 50+ (50–99) and 0.18% at 1,000,000 or more.

What this means for you

  • This is a pattern, not a cause. Big apps tend to be free with in-app purchases; the data does not show that charging upfront costs installs, only that paid apps sit lower.
  • Planning a paid app? Compare it with paid apps. 10,000 or more installs puts a paid app in the top 6.41% of the paid apps GetAppNiche read. For prices and pay models by category, see free vs paid Android apps.

What this means for you

  • "Good" depends on the category. 10,000 or more installs puts a Business app in the top 9.32% of the Business apps GetAppNiche read, while in Simulation 58.41% of apps are already there.
  • A low median is not always low demand. In Food & Drink, 56.51% of apps come from developer names that publish 101 or more apps, so its ranges say as much about bulk publishing as about demand. Look at the apps behind a number before you judge a category. The Google Play categories page breaks this out for every category.

Ratings

How many Android apps show a star rating?

Only 14.25% of the listings GetAppNiche read show a star rating. It climbs with installs: 34.44% of apps with 1,000 or more installs show one, 54.16% of apps with 10,000 or more, and 80.51% of apps with 100,000 or more. In the single range 1,000–4,999 it is 12.52%.

What this means for you

  • No stars yet is normal for a small app. Only 14.70% of apps with 1,000–9,999 installs show a star rating, so showing one early already sets an app apart from most apps its size.
  • Ask happy users to rate. Google's in-app review flow lets people rate without leaving your app. For what counts as a good score, see what a good Google Play rating is.

FAQ

Android app installs: quick answers

What does "10K+ downloads" mean on Google Play?

It means 10,000 to 49,999 lifetime installs: Google Play shows installs as a range, and the label is the lower end of it. Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), 19.53% show 10K+ or a higher range, so 10K+ puts an app in the top 19.53%. The range is the only install figure the listing shows; the app's developer sees detailed install statistics in Google Play Console.

Is 1,000 downloads good for an Android app?

It is above the typical app. Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the median app shows 100+ (100 to 499 lifetime installs) and 60.98% show fewer than 1,000, so an app showing 1K+ is in the top 39.02%. For a game it is closer to typical: the median game shows 1K+ (1,000–4,999) installs.

What percentage of Android apps reach 1 million downloads?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), 2.46% (64,147 apps, about 1 in 41) show 1,000,000 or more installs. 0.52% (13,521 apps) show 10,000,000 or more, 1,424 apps (0.0546%) show 100,000,000 or more and 169 show 1,000,000,000 or more.

How many downloads does the average Android app get?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the typical (median) app shows 100+ on its listing: 100 to 499 lifetime installs. A mean can't be computed honestly from ranges, and a few apps with billions of installs would pull it far above the typical app, so the median range is the useful answer. 34.81% show fewer than 100 installs.

Does the Google Play download count show active users?

No. The "Downloads" label on a Google Play listing is a range of installs, not active or monthly users, and it does not say how many people still have the app. Google does not publish a public definition of what the label counts, for example whether reinstalls count, so read it as a lower bound of installs to date.

Where can I see my app's own install numbers?

In Google Play Console. Everyone else sees only the range on the public listing; the app's developer sees detailed install and user statistics in Play Console. For a competitor's app, the range on its listing is the figure you can see.
