How many apps are on Google Play in 2026?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), at least 312,078 are games, 906,287 distinct developer names publish them, and only 2.46% show 1,000,000 or more installs.

Google itself publishes no official total: its own pages describe the store only as holding millions of apps and games. Other trackers published figures from about 2.0 to 3.0 million in September 2026, because each counts something different (why counts differ).

Games vs apps

How many games are on Google Play?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), at least 312,078 are games (11.97%), up to 375,997 (14.42%) if every Sports listing is a game. At least 2,231,538 (85.58%) are apps in the 31 app categories other than Sports.

The range exists because Google Play uses one "Sports" label for an app category and a game category. Google lists 32 app categories and 17 game categories (Google Play Console Help), so listings show 48 labels and the 63,919 Sports listings cannot be split. 1 listing shows no category.

  • Sports (app or game) 2.45%
  • Non-game apps (31 app categories) 85.58%

Google Play uses the label 'Sports' for both an app category and a game category; the data cannot split them, so game counts are a range. The bar leaves out the one listing with no category. Source: GetAppNiche, 2,607,536 Google Play apps on the US store, listings read Sep 6–29, 2026.

What this means for you: a new game joins a young field. Half of the still-listed games that show a release date came out after March 25, 2025; for non-game apps the midpoint is January 24, 2024, so a new app meets more listings that have had years to collect installs and ratings.

Developers

How many developers publish apps on Google Play?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the listings carry 906,287 distinct developer names, and the 1,590 of them that each have 101 or more apps together hold 18.32% of the listings. The median name has 1 app and the mean is 2.88: 593,533 names (65.49%) publish a single app, and together they hold 22.76% of the listings.

The 1,590 names with 101 or more apps are bulk publishers, such as white-label platforms that publish one app per client; between them they hold 477,578 listings. These are names as shown on the listings, not accounts. A cross-check by Google Play developer id, carried by 96.55% of listings, finds 885,129 ids and the same pattern: 1,523 ids with 101 or more apps hold 17.97% of the listings that carry an id.

What this means for you: count developers, not listings. 65.49% of the names publish a single app, while 1,590 bulk publishers account for 18.32% of the listings, so a niche that looks crowded may be a few publishers with many similar apps. Check who publishes before you rule a niche out.

Installs

How many Google Play apps actually get installed?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), 39.02% show 1,000 or more installs, 19.53% show 10,000 or more and only 2.46% (1 in 41) show 1,000,000 or more. 60.98% of listings show fewer than 1,000 installs.

These are Google Play's public install ranges: the "Downloads" label on each listing, a lower bound of worldwide lifetime installs, not active users. At the top, 1,424 listings show 100,000,000 or more installs and 169 show 1,000,000,000 or more. Only 14.25% of listings show a star rating at all.

App age

How old are the apps still listed on Google Play?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the median app that shows a release date came out on March 13, 2024: 2 years 6 months before September 29, 2026. A quarter were released on or before May 21, 2021; 29.84% came out in the last 365 days (recent months still filling in) and 27.24% more than 5 years ago.

These are the ages of apps still listed, not launches: apps removed before GetAppNiche read them are missing, so older years are undercounted and the ages skew young. 89.45% of listings show a release date. For still-listed releases per day and by month, see new Google Play apps per day.

Shares are of all 2,332,470 apps with a release date, including those dated Jul 1, 2026 or later, which are left out of the rows while they fill in; so the rows add up to less than 100%. Source: GetAppNiche, 2,607,536 Google Play apps on the US store, listings read Sep 6–29, 2026.

What this means for you: install ranges are lifetime totals, so they favour old apps. The median app with 1,000,000+ installs came out on June 18, 2019, and 69.31% of those that show a release date are more than 5 years old. Compare a new app's installs with apps released around the same time, not with the leaders of its category.

Other counts

Why do Google Play app counts differ?

Because each source counts something different, and none is official: Google publishes no total. A count can cover one storefront or several, a single day or several weeks, and only apps still available or every listing seen in that window. Where a source states its method, the table says so.

Google Play app counts and what each one counts
Source Figure What it counts Date
GetAppNiche (this page) 2,607,536 Google Play apps whose full US store listing GetAppNiche read in the 30 days to Sep 29, 2026; an app removed after its last read still counts, and apps sold only outside the US are outside this count Listings read Sep 6–29, 2026
42matters 2,589,146 Apps it lists as offered on Google Play; no definition is published, and the figure changes daily Last update Sep 30, 2026
AppBrain 2,001,911 Apps available on Google Play (its headline rounds this to 2 million); the page gives no method Last updated Sep 29, 2026
Testers Community 3,037,501 Distinct Google Play listings seen over 30 days, Jul 27–Aug 25, 2026; the study presents it as a dated tally, not a one-day store total Study dated Sep 16, 2026
Appfigures, as reported by TechCrunch about 1.8 million Apps hosted on Google Play worldwide, down 47% from about 3.4 million at the start of 2024; the article does not state the method Published Apr 29, 2025

Each figure is quoted as its source published it, with the date its page shows. Sources are named, not linked.

That is also why a one-storefront count like ours can be higher than another tracker's total: GetAppNiche keeps every listing it read successfully in a 30-day window, so an app removed after that read still counts, while a count of apps available on a single day would drop it.

Counts from before and after 2024 differ too. In July 2024 Google tightened its minimum-functionality rules: apps with only limited functionality and content, such as single-wallpaper or text-only apps, are not allowed. Appfigures, as reported by TechCrunch on April 29, 2025, counted about 1.8 million apps, down 47% from about 3.4 million at the start of 2024; Google itself published no removal count. For 2025, Google says it stopped more than 1.75 million policy-violating apps from being published and banned more than 80,000 developer accounts.

What this means for you: quote any total with its source and date, and compare like with like. When you size a niche, count it the way you count the store: same storefront, same date, same definition.

Google Play vs App Store

Does Google Play have more apps than the App Store?

No official figure settles it: neither Google nor Apple publishes a total. By 42matters' count on September 30, 2026, the App Store listed slightly more apps (2,669,158) than Google Play (2,589,146); other trackers count differently, and AppBrain counts Google Play only.

GetAppNiche's own App Store figure comes from a different set, built a different way, so it is not a like-for-like match for the 2,607,536 Google Play listings on this page. For the iPhone side, see how many apps are in the App Store.

What this means for you: by that count the two stores are close in size, so the store total will not decide where you build. Pick the store your users are on, then size your niche there.

FAQ

How many apps are on Google Play: quick answers

How many apps are on Google Play in 2026?

Google publishes no official total. GetAppNiche read 2,607,536 Google Play listings on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), counting apps still listed when it last read them; at least 312,078 of them are games. Other trackers published figures from about 2.0 to 3.0 million in September 2026, because each defines and dates its count differently.

Does Google publish how many apps are on Google Play?

No. Google publishes no official count of Google Play apps: its own pages describe the store only as holding millions of apps and games, next to figures such as more than 2.5 billion monthly users in 190+ markets. In its 2025 Google Play safety recap (February 2026), Google says it stopped more than 1.75 million policy-violating apps from being published in 2025 and banned more than 80,000 developer accounts, but it gives no count of the apps listed or removed.

Why do Google Play app counts differ so much?

Because each source counts something different, and none is official. 42matters reports 2,589,146 (apps it lists as offered on Google Play, with no published definition; last update Sep 30, 2026), AppBrain reports 2,001,911 (apps available on Google Play; last updated Sep 29, 2026) and Testers Community reports 3,037,501 (distinct listings seen over 30 days, Jul 27–Aug 25, 2026; study dated Sep 16, 2026). GetAppNiche read 2,607,536 listings on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), counting apps still listed when it last read them. A count can cover one storefront or several, a single day or several weeks, and only apps still available or every listing seen.

How many games are on Google Play?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), at least 312,078 are games (11.97%), up to 375,997 (14.42%) if every Sports listing is a game. Google lists 17 game categories and 32 app categories, but Sports is one label for both, so the 63,919 Sports listings cannot be split. The median game still listed was released on March 25, 2025.

Does Google Play have more apps than the App Store?

No official figure settles it: neither Google nor Apple publishes a total. By 42matters' count on September 30, 2026, the App Store listed slightly more apps (2,669,158) than Google Play (2,589,146); other trackers count differently. GetAppNiche's own App Store and Google Play figures are built differently, so they are not a store-to-store comparison.

How many developer names publish Google Play apps?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), the listings carry 906,287 distinct developer names: names as shown on the listings, not developer accounts. The median name has 1 app. 593,533 names (65.49%) publish exactly one app, while the 1,590 names that each have 101 or more apps hold 477,578 listings between them, 18.32% of the total.

How many apps on Google Play have over 1 million installs?

Of the 2,607,536 Google Play apps GetAppNiche read on the US store (Sep 6–29, 2026), 64,147 (2.46%, about 1 in 41) show 1,000,000 or more installs. 13,521 (0.52%) show 10,000,000 or more, 1,424 show 100,000,000 or more and 169 show 1,000,000,000 or more. These are Google Play's public install ranges, a lower bound of lifetime installs.
