20 Education App Niches Ranked by Data: Winners at Just 401 Ratings (2026)
We measured 20 education sub-niches across 84,961 iOS apps. Exam-prep winners carry just 401 median ratings — the softest proven niche we've ever found.
Somewhere in the Education category right now, 91 apps are each clearing an estimated $1,000/month with a median of just 401 ratings. Not 4,010. Four hundred and one. That is the lowest incumbent mass we have measured in any category analysis we’ve run — softer than anything we found in productivity or health & fitness — and it sits inside a category with some of the worst headline odds in the store.
Both facts matter, so here’s the full frame. Education is the second-biggest category on the App Store: 84,961 iOS apps in our July 7, 2026 snapshot, behind only Business (95,001). Of those, just 3,836 (4.5%) show any revenue signal, versus 7.4% store-wide. Only 1,531 (1.80%) clear an estimated $1,000/month, versus 3.2% store-wide — nearly the worst conversion of any major category. The median earner makes an estimated $643/month, while the top 10% clear an estimated $13,500/month or more.
So “build an education app” is one of the worst generic bets you can make, and the category simultaneously contains the single softest proven niche in our data plus a sub-niche with a $50,786/month estimated winner median. The label is doing no work. The sub-niche is everything. We split Education into 20 sub-niches and measured each one.
The 20 education sub-niches, measured
For each sub-niche we counted iOS Education apps with the keyword in their App Store title, how many clear an estimated $1,000/month (“winners”), the median estimated monthly revenue of those winners, and the median rating count of those winners — our proxy for how entrenched the incumbents are.

Exam prep: the fragmentation dividend
The 401-ratings number deserves an explanation, because it isn’t luck. Exam prep is not one market — it’s hundreds. Every certification, professional license, state driving test, citizenship exam, and country-specific entrance exam is its own micro-market with its own vocabulary, its own question bank, and its own buyers who search for exactly their exam by name. No single app can own all of them, so no giant forms. The biggest exam-prep winner in our data carries only 27,508 ratings — in most categories that’s mid-table.
The result: 91 winners, median just 401 ratings, and a structure that is replicable — the playbook that works for one exam ports to the next. The trade-off is ceiling: the median winner earns an estimated $2,571/month, the lowest of any multi-winner niche in the table. Exam prep is a portfolio game, not a jackpot game. The adjacent driving & permit bucket (5 winners at 7,132 median ratings) shows what happens when one exam type gets popular enough to consolidate.
Languages: the barbell market
Language learning is two markets pretending to be one. The generic end is dominated by a giant carrying roughly 5,300,170 ratings — one of the heaviest incumbents anywhere in the store — and competing with it head-on is not a plan. Yet the niche as a whole shows 80 winners at a strong estimated $10,232/month median and a moderate 3,539 median ratings, because most winners aren’t fighting the giant at all.
The proof is the Spanish row: 11 language-specific winners with a median estimated revenue of $50,786/month — the highest in this table by a factor of three — at just 3,265 median ratings. Apps built for one language pair, one proficiency goal, or one learner type survived the giant and got rich doing it. Vocabulary (9 winners, est. $15,429/month median) shows the same specificity premium, though its winners are heavier at 8,932 median ratings. English is the crowded shallow end: 2,034 apps chasing the broadest possible keyword, 46 winners at a modest estimated $3,536/month.
Music instruction: fat medians, closed doors
Piano and guitar have the fattest sustained winner medians in the category — an estimated $17,357 and $17,036/month respectively — and the heaviest walls. Winners in both carry 13,200+ median ratings, and the piano niche is topped by a roughly 831,834-rating giant. These are consolidated subscription lesson platforms with content libraries built over years; the revenue is real, but it describes who already won. If you enter here, you enter with an instrument, a pedagogy, or an audience the platforms ignore — not with a better metronome.
Kids: the volume king, with paperwork
Kids & toddler is the widest proven market in Education: 227 winners — more than the next two rows combined — at an estimated $5,786/month median and a workable 4,892 median ratings. Parents pay, repeatedly, across ages and subjects, and the niche keeps minting mid-sized winners even under a giant with roughly 632,601 ratings at the top.
The honest caveat: kids’ apps carry compliance overhead nothing else in this table has. Parental gates, children’s-privacy rules, restricted ad and analytics behavior, and a stricter App Review path all add real work before your first download. Budget for it — the 227 winners did.
The soft corners: small niches, real money
Three rows combine proven revenue with incumbents small enough to challenge. Chess: 5 winners at just 1,667 median ratings — training and puzzle apps, an estimated $3,857/month median. Reading & phonics: 7 winners at 2,061 median ratings, an estimated $4,500/month median, sitting adjacent to the kids market without all of its crowding. Sign language: 7 winners at 4,645 median ratings with a strong estimated $10,286/month median — a market with motivated learners and almost no serious supply (38 apps total). Flashcards and coding are the next tier out: moderate incumbents (3,340 and 3,800 median ratings), real medians (est. $4,485 and $6,750/month), though flashcards is topped by a roughly 1,090,356-rating giant, so the win is a specific study workflow, not a generic deck app.
Grammar is the cautionary mirror image: 2 winners at a crushing 20,090 median ratings. Real money, no visible middle class, no obvious way in.
The dead zones: where nobody pays
Anatomy: 125 apps, zero winners. Typing: 26 apps, zero. Chemistry: 198 apps, one winner at an estimated $1,286/month. The pattern across all three is the same: STEM reference content does not monetize on iOS. The natural buyers are schools and institutions, and they don’t buy through the App Store — they buy site licenses through procurement. The individual consumer, meanwhile, can search any anatomy fact for free. An empty niche here is not an opportunity waiting for better execution; it’s a market that has already voted. Math escapes this trap (53 winners) because it sells practice and tutoring to parents and students, not reference to institutions.
How we measured — and the limits
- Sub-niche = the keyword appears as a substring in the app’s App Store title, Education category only. Consistent but crude: a language app filed under Reference is missed entirely, and a “Kids Math Quiz” app counts in three buckets.
- Every dollar figure is a labeled model estimate. GetAppNiche generates it with a proprietary multi-signal model; nobody outside Apple has reported per-app revenue.
- Median ratings of winners is our incumbent-mass proxy — how big the apps you’d need to displace are, not how hard a keyword is to rank for.
- This is the supply side only. We have no search-volume data here; check demand for any candidate in the free App Store keyword tool before acting on a row.
- Snapshot: July 7, 2026, 744,874 iOS apps analyzed. iOS App Store only; the dataset is updated daily.
From table row to buildable idea
- Start where the structure favors newcomers. Exam prep (pick one specific certification or country), chess, reading & phonics, and language-specific apps all pair proven winners with median incumbent ratings under ~3,300. Ignore the empty rows — anatomy and typing are dead ends, not gaps.
- Verify demand for the specific angle. Run your exam name, language pair, or skill through the free App Store keyword tool. A fragmented niche only works if people actually search for your fragment.
- Size the winners you’d sit beside. Look up the current earners in the free app revenue checker — in exam prep especially, confirm the micro-market you picked has at least one app making real estimated money.
- Then narrow again. The 1.80% odds belong to “an education app”. An app for one exam, one language, one instrument, one reading level — that’s the version of this category where the odds flip. Our app idea validation guide covers the full pre-build checklist, and the low-competition niches guide shows what this analysis looks like across the whole store.
