24 Productivity App Niches Ranked by Real Data (2026)
We measured 24 productivity sub-niches across 47,466 iOS apps: winners, estimated revenue, incumbent mass. It underpays — sub-niche choice is everything.
Let’s start with the uncomfortable part. Productivity is one of the most crowded categories on the App Store — 47,466 iOS apps in our July 7, 2026 snapshot — and it monetizes below the store average. Only 2,700 of those apps (5.7%) show any revenue signal, versus 7.4% store-wide. Just 1,227 (2.59%) clear an estimated $1,000/month, versus 3.2% store-wide. The median earner makes an estimated $643/month.
So “build a productivity app” is a below-average bet, full stop. And yet the top 10% of Productivity earners clear an estimated $20,611/month or more — one of the fatter right tails we’ve measured. Both things are true because the category is really 24 different markets wearing one label, and they behave nothing alike. A generic to-do app and a niche writing tool face completely different odds.
We ran the same analysis here that we ran for health & fitness sub-niches: split the category by title keyword, count who actually earns, and measure how big the incumbents are.
The 24 productivity sub-niches, measured
For each sub-niche we counted iOS Productivity apps with the keyword in their App Store title, how many clear an estimated $1,000/month (“winners”), the median estimated monthly revenue of those winners, and the median rating count of those winners — a proxy for how entrenched the incumbents are.

The ratio plays: real money, small incumbents
The number that matters most for a new app is winners against incumbent mass — proof the niche pays, held by apps small enough to challenge.
Writing tools are the standout. Twenty apps clear an estimated $1k/month at a median of $4,067, and the median winner has just 1,512 ratings — the lowest bar of any sub-niche with 20+ winners in this category. These are grammar helpers, AI writing assistants, and job-specific editors, not one monolithic brand. If there’s a peer-fight zone in Productivity, this is it.
Keyboards pair soft incumbents with the highest revenue. Seventeen winners at a median of an estimated $11,571/month — the highest of any non-giant-dominated niche here — with winners at only 2,777 median ratings. Custom keyboards are unglamorous and technically fiddly, which is probably exactly why the corner stays profitable.
Timers, widgets, and clipboards are the small-and-soft tier. Timer winners sit at 1,805 median ratings (17 of them), widget winners at 2,304 (14), clipboard winners at 1,302 (only 3 — tiny but genuinely empty). Modest medians (est. $1,929–$2,571/month), but these are utilities where a clearly better tool can still climb without fighting a brand.
The giant-dominated fronts: most winners, biggest walls
Notes, PDF, calendar, and email have the most winners — and the heaviest tops. Notes leads the whole table with 85 winners, but the biggest notes app carries roughly 1.05 million ratings; the biggest PDF app about 1.84 million; the biggest calendar app 1.52 million. Email is the extreme case: a strong estimated $9,643/month median among 20 winners, but those winners carry 9,890 median ratings and the niche is topped by a giant with roughly 4.7 million ratings.
High winner counts describe who already won — they don’t lower the wall for the next entrant. These niches still produce new successes, but nearly always through a wedge: a notes app for one profession, a PDF tool for one workflow, a calendar for one scheduling pain the giants treat as an edge case. To-do apps (609 in the bucket, 16 winners at 4,425 median ratings) follow the same rule.
The high-value corners: fewer slots, bigger prizes
Email, resume, and files reward whoever gets in. Email’s estimated $9,643/month median we covered above. Resume tools match it — but from only 2 winners carrying 10,666 median ratings, a professional-buyer market where distribution matters more than code. File managers show an estimated $7,714/month median across 15 winners at a heavy 12,409 median ratings. Password managers ($5,250 est. median, 21 winners) and planners ($5,036 est., 39 winners) are the more accessible middle of this tier, though both carry 6,800+ median ratings.
The pattern matches what we saw with invoice and mortgage keywords in finance: when the buyer is professional or the data is critical, revenue per app jumps — and so does the incumbent you’d have to displace.
The warning zones: low competition can mean no demand
Checklist: 83 apps, zero winners. Not one checklist-titled app clears an estimated $1,000/month. An empty niche is not automatically an opportunity — sometimes the market has voted.
Pomodoro: 199 apps, 4 winners. This might be the most-built, least-bought idea in the category. Pomodoro timers are a beloved weekend project, and the data says almost nobody pays for one. The broader “focus” bucket (27 winners) captures whatever willingness to pay exists here.
Journal: winners that barely win. Six winners at an estimated $1,286/month median — the smallest winner median in the table. Note that journaling monetizes far better inside Health & Fitness framing (mood, gratitude, therapy) than as a Productivity utility.
Whiteboard and mind map: thin and top-heavy. Two whiteboard winners at 11,858 median ratings; one mind-map winner at 6,957. Few slots, established occupants, no visible middle class.
How we measured — and what this can’t tell you
- Sub-niche = the keyword appears as a substring in the app’s App Store title, Productivity category only. Crude but consistent — a “Notes & PDF Scanner” app counts in multiple buckets, and a to-do app called “Things” is missed entirely.
- Every revenue figure is a labeled model estimate. GetAppNiche generates it with a proprietary multi-signal model; nobody outside Apple has reported per-app revenue.
- Median ratings of winners = our incumbent-mass proxy: how big are the apps you’d need to displace, not how hard it is to rank.
- This is the supply side only. We have no App Store search-volume data. Pair any candidate with a demand check in the free keyword tool before committing.

Turning a row of this table into a decision
- Pick from the peer-fight zone. Start where winners exist and their median ratings are under ~3,000: writing, keyboard, timer, widget, clipboard. Skip rows where the “opportunity” is zero winners.
- Check demand. Run 2–3 keywords for your sub-niche through the free App Store keyword tool for difficulty and popularity. Supply-side softness plus no search volume is a dead end, not a gap.
- Size the real prize. Look up the sub-niche leaders in the free app revenue checker. Estimated revenue spread across several mid-sized apps is a healthy market; one whale and nothing else is a warning.
- Narrow to a job, not a category. The 2.59% category-level odds are for “a productivity app”. A writing tool for one profession, a keyboard for one language, a timer for one workflow — that’s how the odds flip. Our app idea validation guide walks the full checklist.
