28 Utilities App Niches Ranked by Real Data (2026)
Utilities is one of the App Store's biggest categories — and it pays below the store average. We measured 28 sub-niches across 74,474 iOS Utilities apps: where the money hides, and where it doesn't.
Utilities is one of the largest categories on the App Store — 74,474 iOS Utilities apps in our July 10, 2026 snapshot — and it quietly pays below the store average. Just 6.90% show any revenue signal (against 7.64% store-wide) and only 2.64% clear an estimated $1,000/month (against 3.10%). The median Utilities winner makes an estimated $3,857/month, under the store’s $4,500. If you assumed “everyone needs a utility, so utilities must sell,” the data says otherwise.
The reason is that Utilities is the most bimodal category we’ve measured. On one side: professional tools people pay for because they need them for work — WiFi analyzers, call recorders, document scanners, AR measure tools. On the other: an enormous tail of free-by-default commodities — flashlights, magnifiers, ringtones, single-sensor gadgets — that nobody has paid for since about 2012. Same category, two completely different games.
We ran the same analysis here as for productivity and photo & video: split the category by title keyword, count who actually earns, and measure how entrenched the incumbents are.
The 28 utility sub-niches, measured
For each sub-niche we counted iOS Utilities apps with the keyword in their App Store title, how many clear an estimated $1,000/month (“winners”), the median estimated monthly revenue of those winners, and the median rating count of those winners — a proxy for how big the incumbents are.

WiFi tools: the standout ratio play
Lead with this one. WiFi apps — analyzers, signal finders, network scanners — show just 13 winners, but at the highest median revenue in the soft tier, an estimated $10,286/month, with only 1,715 median ratings. High money, small incumbents: that combination is rare, and it happens here because WiFi tools sell to a semi-professional buyer (IT, installers, prosumers) who will pay for something that reliably does a boring job. The niche is small and technical, which is exactly why the giants haven’t consolidated it.
Screen-mirroring and call/voice recorders sit one shelf up on both axes. Mirror apps: 23 winners at an estimated $7,714/month median (3,958 ratings). Recorders: 18 winners at $8,411 (5,770 ratings). Both are jobs-to-be-done tools with a real “I need this for work” buyer — the same pattern as teleprompters in photo & video and invoice tools in finance keywords.
The soft-incumbent tier: real money, small doors
Beyond WiFi, the utility niches that combine proven revenue with manageable incumbents:
- Cleaner (100 winners, 1,336 median ratings) and document scanner (49 winners, 1,331 ratings) have the softest incumbents of any high-winner utility niche. Scanner is the cleaner story of the two — a legitimate, well-understood job (see the VPN/cleaner caveat below before you build a cleaner).
- Storage managers (53 winners, $4,500, 2,036 ratings) and AR measure tools (22 winners, $4,179, 2,101 ratings) are the quiet middle: modest medians, small incumbents, real buyers.
- Ad blockers (30 winners, $3,850, 3,937 ratings) pay steadily, though Safari content-blocker mechanics cap how differentiated you can be.
The big-volume, thin-odds middle
The most crowded utility keywords are not the most rewarding ones:
- Calculator: 1,531 apps — the biggest single niche — but only 47 winners. Enormous supply, ordinary odds, 3,602 median ratings among the winners. A generic calculator is the definition of a commodity; the winners are specialized (mortgage, construction, scientific, unit-heavy).
- QR code (1,046 apps, 40 winners) and scanner (1,039, 49) are similarly deep. QR is largely solved by the system camera, which caps willingness to pay.
- Converter (753 apps, 19 winners at just an estimated $2,141/month median) is the weakest revenue in the table for its size — a feature, not a product.
The lucrative-but-fraught corner: VPN and cleaner
This is the honest heart of the category. VPNs (113 winners, an estimated $6,321/month median) and cleaners (100 winners, $3,214) produce more winners than almost anything else in Utilities — and they are the two niches to think hardest about before entering.
Both are reputationally fraught. Apple has repeatedly scrutinized and pulled misleading “cleaner” apps and questionable VPNs; both categories run on heavy paid acquisition and aggressive trials; both attract review-bombing, chargebacks, and App Review friction. The revenue is real, but it’s earned in a rough neighborhood. If you build here, do it with a genuinely honest product, transparent pricing, and a plan for surviving App Review — not a reskinned scare-ware cleaner.
The entrenched walls and dead zones
- Flashlight: 6 winners carrying 29,566 median ratings. Ancient, entrenched, and free by default — the money that exists is locked behind decade-old incumbents. Skip it.
- Speed test (8 winners, 18,123 ratings) and compass (5 winners, 11,355 ratings) are single-sensor niches owned by giants (Ookla-scale for speed test). New entrants fight institutions for a commodity.
- Magnifier: 20 apps, zero winners. Not one clears an estimated $1,000/month — iOS ships a magnifier for free.
- Ringtone (1 of 20) and ruler (3 of 75) are cheap-to-enter, cheap-for-a-reason corners: low willingness to pay, no room to differentiate.
- Battery (7 winners at an estimated $1,929/month median) rounds out the low-pay tail — iOS’s own battery tools set the bar.
One data note: backup shows 4 winners at just 70 median ratings — unusually low, but on only 4 apps that’s a thin-sample curiosity, not a proven soft niche. Treat any row with a handful of winners as directional, not gospel.
How we measured — and what this can’t tell you
- Sub-niche = the keyword appears as a substring in the app’s App Store title, Utilities category only. Crude but consistent — a “Remote & WiFi Scanner” counts in several buckets, and a well-named utility with a brand title is missed.
- Every revenue figure is a labeled model estimate. GetAppNiche generates it with a proprietary multi-signal model; nobody outside Apple has reported per-app revenue.
- Median ratings of winners = our incumbent-mass proxy: how big are the apps you’d need to displace, not how hard it is to rank.
- This is the supply side only. We have no App Store search-volume data. Pair any candidate with a demand check in the free keyword tool before committing.

Turning a row of this table into a decision
- Start in the soft-incumbent tier, not the biggest niche. WiFi tools, screen mirroring, recorders, scanners, storage, and AR measure have winners at under ~2,500 median ratings. Skip calculator and QR unless you have a sharp specialization.
- Check demand. Run 2–3 keywords for your sub-niche through the free App Store keyword tool. Supply-side softness with no search volume is a dead end, not a gap.
- Size the real prize. Look up the sub-niche leaders in the free app revenue checker. Estimated revenue spread across several mid-sized apps is a healthy market; one whale and nothing else is a warning.
- Weigh the reputation cost. If you’re eyeing VPN or cleaner, price in App Review risk and trust headwinds before the revenue. Our app idea validation guide walks the full checklist.
