32 Photo & Video App Niches Ranked by Real Data (2026)
We measured 32 photo & video sub-niches across 17,327 iOS apps: winners, estimated revenue, incumbent mass. The category outpays the store — if you dodge the giants.
Photo & Video is the rare crowded category that actually pays. Across the 17,327 iOS Photo & Video apps in our July 7, 2026 snapshot, 12.3% show some revenue signal — against 7.4% store-wide — and 1,092 apps (6.30%) clear an estimated $1,000/month, against 3.26% store-wide. That’s 1.7–1.9× the store’s odds on both counts, and the median earner makes an estimated $1,179/month versus $643 store-wide. In our category odds ranking, only Games, Weather, and Graphics & Design do better.
The catch is that the money sits behind two very different doors. Some of it is guarded by the heaviest incumbents we’ve measured anywhere — editor apps with three million ratings. And some of it sits in unglamorous utility corners where the median winner has a few hundred ratings and no brand at all. Same category, opposite games.
We ran the same analysis here as for productivity and AI niches: split the category by title keyword, count who actually earns, and measure how big the incumbents are.
The 32 photo & video sub-niches, measured
For each sub-niche we counted iOS Photo & Video apps with the keyword in their App Store title, how many clear an estimated $1,000/month (“winners”), the median estimated monthly revenue of those winners, and the median rating count of those winners — a proxy for how entrenched the incumbents are.

Camera: the biggest niche is also one of the softest
This is the anomaly worth leading with. Camera apps have the most winners in the category — 108 — and yet those winners carry just 1,438 median ratings, one of the lowest incumbent-mass scores in the table. That combination (lots of proven money, small incumbents) almost never happens; in productivity, every high-winner niche was walled by giants.
The reason is fragmentation. “Camera” isn’t one market — it’s manual cameras, vintage and film-look cameras, dash cams, document cameras, watermark cameras for field work, halide-style pro tools. Each style is its own micro-niche with its own buyers, so no single brand consolidates the keyword. A distinctive camera with one clear point of view is still one of the most realistic entries in this category.
The utility corners: small incumbents, real money
Teleprompter is the standout ratio play of the whole table. Eleven winners at an estimated $9,000/month median — and the median winner has just 659 ratings. These are tools sold to creators and professionals who need them for work, which is exactly the buyer profile that pays for boring software. The pattern matches what we found with invoice tools in finance keywords: professional buyer, soft incumbents, real money.
Subtitles & captions, compressors, and converters are the quiet middle. Caption tools show 12 winners at 1,416 median ratings; video compressors 8 at 1,452; converters 7 at 1,862. Modest medians (est. $1,286–$3,857/month), but these are jobs-to-be-done utilities where a clearly better tool still climbs on merit. Screen recorders (19 winners at 2,400) and retouch tools (11 at 2,323) sit one shelf up on both revenue and competition.
Photo scan is the sleeper. Only 109 apps, but 13 winners at an estimated $11,893/month median — third-highest revenue in the table — with winners at a manageable 4,224 median ratings. Digitizing old photos is an unglamorous job with a paying demographic.
The AI wave: real revenue, short clocks
‘AI photo’ in the title yields 74 winners at an estimated $7,554/month median; ‘AI video’ yields 62 at $5,304. Two honest caveats. First, the buckets overlap the editor niches — the single biggest ‘AI video’ winner is an editor app carrying about 3.4 million ratings, so the top of the wave is already institutional. Second, AI-photo winners carry 4,358 median ratings while AI-video winners carry 2,101 — the photo side is consolidating first, exactly the “AI niches age in dog years” pattern from our AI niches analysis.
Headshot is the extreme case: just 2 winners, but at an estimated $25,071/month median with only 1,736 median ratings. AI headshots for LinkedIn-style profiles is a hot, thin, professional-buyer niche — the upside and the risk are both obvious. Face swap (12 winners at 1,996) and enhancers (23 at 3,574) are the more populated mid-tier of the same wave.
The giant walls: highest medians, heaviest doors
Video editor, photo editor, collage, GIF. Video-editor winners show a strong estimated $10,286/month median — carried by incumbents at 21,345 median ratings, topped by an app with roughly 2.5 million. Photo-editor winners sit at 12,492 median ratings under a 3.4-million-rating giant. Collage has the best median in the big niches (est. $15,429/month) behind 16,024-rating incumbents. GIF winners carry 24,062.
Photo book & print has the heaviest incumbents we’ve measured in any category: 26 winners at an estimated $14,946/month median — carrying 51,974 median ratings. Printing is a logistics business wearing an app costume; the wall isn’t the software, it’s the fulfillment operation behind it.
These niches still produce new winners, but nearly always through a wedge: an editor for one aesthetic, a collage tool for one use case, a print product for one occasion. A generic entry fights institutions.
The warning zones: cheap to enter, cheap for a reason
- Time lapse: 30 apps, zero winners. Not one clears an estimated $1,000/month. The camera giants absorbed the feature.
- Sticker makers: 1 of 127. One winner — carrying 40,451 ratings. The corner is simultaneously saturated and unprofitable.
- Templates (1 of 42) and watermark tools (3 of 75, est. $1,929/month median): one-feature utilities that the big editors bundle for free.
- Meme makers show a juicy $11,250 median — from exactly 2 winners at 28,476 median ratings. That’s not a niche, that’s two incumbents.
How we measured — and what this can’t tell you
- Sub-niche = the keyword appears as a substring in the app’s App Store title, Photo & Video category only. Crude but consistent — an “AI Photo & Video Editor” counts in several buckets, and a camera app called “Halide” is missed entirely.
- Every revenue figure is a labeled model estimate. GetAppNiche generates it with a proprietary multi-signal model; nobody outside Apple has reported per-app revenue.
- Median ratings of winners = our incumbent-mass proxy: how big are the apps you’d need to displace, not how hard it is to rank.
- This is the supply side only. We have no App Store search-volume data. Pair any candidate with a demand check in the free keyword tool before committing.

Turning a row of this table into a decision
- Start in the soft-incumbent tier. Teleprompters, captions, compressors, retouch, face swap, and above all camera — winners exist and their median ratings are under ~2,500. Skip rows where the “opportunity” is zero winners.
- Check demand. Run 2–3 keywords for your sub-niche through the free App Store keyword tool. Supply-side softness plus no search volume is a dead end, not a gap.
- Size the real prize. Look up the sub-niche leaders in the free app revenue checker. Estimated revenue spread across several mid-sized apps is a healthy market; one whale and nothing else is a warning.
- Mind the clock on AI niches. The AI corners of this category consolidate in roughly two years. If your plan needs 18 months of runway before shipping, the window you see today isn’t the window you’ll launch into. Our app idea validation guide walks the full checklist.
