14 AI App Niches With Real Revenue in 2026 (1,322 Winners Measured)
We measured 14 AI app niches across 744,874 iOS apps. The median AI-titled winner shipped in 2024 with just 1,590 ratings — the softest field we track.
Here is the single most useful number we’ve found for anyone deciding what to build in 2026: the median iOS app with “AI” in its title that earns an estimated $1,000/month has 1,590 ratings and shipped in 2024.
Sit with that. In health & fitness, the winners in major sub-niches carry 3,000–23,000 median ratings — apps that spent years compounding. In AI, 1,322 apps are already clearing an estimated $1k/month, and the typical one is barely two years old with a rating count an indie launch can realistically match. This is the softest incumbent field we’ve measured across 744,874 iOS apps.
The same fact cuts the other way, though. A field where two-year-old apps are the establishment is a field where two-year-old apps get displaced. AI niches churn fast, model API costs are a real line item that most app categories don’t pay, and today’s wedge is next year’s ChatGPT feature. The rest of this guide is about which corners of the AI wave still reward a new entrant — and which already closed.
What we counted (read this before the table)
Unlike our productivity and health & fitness breakdowns, this analysis is cross-category: we bucketed apps by title keywords across the entire store, because AI apps live everywhere from Utilities to Education to Photo & Video.
One honesty note that most “AI app ideas” listicles skip: not every bucket below is purely AI. “AI” as a title word and “AI chat” are AI-specific. But “assistant”, “avatar”, “tutor”, “companion”, and “transcribe” are AI-adjacent spaces where plenty of non-AI apps also live — a human-tutoring marketplace counts in the tutor bucket. The table labels these explicitly, and the numbers describe the niche you’d actually compete in, which is arguably more useful anyway.
The 14 AI app niches, measured
For each bucket: iOS apps with the keyword in their App Store title, how many clear an estimated $1,000/month (“winners”), the median estimated revenue of those winners, their median rating count (incumbent mass), and their median release year (wave age).
| Bucket | Apps | Winners ≥$1k/mo | Median est. rev (winners) | Median ratings (winners) | Median release year (winners) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| “AI” as a title word | 18,437 | 1,322 | $5,143 | 1,590 | 2024 |
| Assistant (any, incl. non-AI) | 1,540 | 85 | $4,500 | 1,408 | 2024 |
| Girlfriend / companion (any) | 1,077 | 60 | $4,123 | 2,079 | 2023 |
| ”AI chat” | 627 | 54 | $4,821 | 1,761 | 2024 |
| Avatar (any) | 300 | 36 | $6,911 | 13,514 | 2022 |
| Chatbot | 416 | 36 | $7,714 | 3,680 | 2024 |
| AI art / image generator | 525 | 27 | $1,929 | 2,502 | 2024 |
| Photo enhancer / upscaler | 260 | 25 | $3,214 | 2,593 | 2022 |
| Tutor (any, incl. non-AI) | 529 | 24 | $2,839 | 1,896 | 2024 |
| Voice / speech AI (TTS, voice clone, STT) | 294 | 23 | $3,857 | 1,215 | 2023 |
| Transcribe | 304 | 21 | $3,857 | 3,549 | 2022 |
| Summarize | 228 | 7 | $18,000 | 6,850 | 2024 |
| Headshot | 158 | 4 | $10,607 | 1,736 | 2024 |
| AI writer / writing | 157 | 2 | $7,714 | 1,936 | 2023 |
Read the release-year column first. It splits the table into two different markets: 2023–2024 waves still being settled, and 2022 waves that already consolidated.
How soft is this, really? Calibrating against other categories
Numbers like “1,590 median ratings” only mean something next to other niches measured the same way, so here’s the calibration.
In our productivity breakdown, the softest proven sub-niche we found was writing tools: 20 winners at 1,512 median ratings, and we called it the standout of the category. The broad AI bucket matches that softness — 1,590 median ratings — with sixty-six times as many winners (1,322 vs 20). Assistant winners, at 1,408 median ratings, are softer than anything in Productivity with more than a handful of earners.
In health & fitness, the equivalent numbers run from about 3,000 median ratings (calorie tracking) to 23,133 (period tracking). The entrenched end of this table — avatars at 13,514 — would be merely mid-pack over there.
Two things follow. First, the AI wave is genuinely the most open large field in the store right now; that’s not narrative, it’s the measurement. Second, the softness is a property of the wave’s youth, not of AI as a topic — the 2022 rows in this same table show exactly what these niches look like eighteen months after consolidation. The window is a window.
The wave still open: 2024 niches with young winners
The broad AI bucket is the headline. 1,322 winners at an estimated $5,143/month median, 1,590 median ratings, median vintage 2024. That’s not one niche — it’s the water level of the whole wave — but it tells you the baseline: real money is flowing to very young apps across the board.
Assistants and AI chat are the accessible core. Assistant-titled winners (85 of them, and remember this bucket includes non-AI assistants) sit at just 1,408 median ratings; “AI chat” winners (54) at 1,761. Chatbots pay better — an estimated $7,714/month median across 36 winners — at a still-moderate 3,680 ratings. The pattern across all three: general-purpose chat is commodity, and the winners increasingly are chat for something — a role, a workflow, a document type.
Tutors ride two waves at once. 24 winners at 1,896 median ratings, median vintage 2024. The bucket mixes AI tutors with human-tutoring apps, but the young vintage says the AI entrants are the ones currently winning slots. Education is also where a wedge is easiest to define: one subject, one exam, one language pair.
A note on what “young winners” means in practice. A 2024-vintage incumbent has weaker network effects, a thinner review moat, and less brand memory than a 2018-vintage one — that’s the opportunity. But it also has a founder who shipped recently, iterates fast, and is fighting for the same slot you want. Displacing a young winner is easier than displacing a giant; being displaced by the next young winner is the tax you pay for entering an open field. Budget for a pace of iteration, not a one-time launch.
The quiet openings: where the table points, not the hype
Voice and speech AI has the lowest incumbent mass of any proven niche here. Text-to-speech, voice cloning, speech-to-text: 23 winners at a median of just 1,215 ratings — the softest number in the table — earning an estimated $3,857/month. While attention crowds into image generation and chat, the audio corner is quietly underpopulated. If we had to name one row worth thirty minutes of validation, it’s this one.
Summarize is the barbell. Only 7 winners — and they earn an estimated $18,000/month median, the biggest prize in the table, nearly double the next-best row. Their 6,850 median ratings say those seven fought for it. Few slots, heavy occupants, enormous payoff: this is a niche you enter with a distribution plan and a specific document type, not a weekend prototype.
Headshots show what a narrow image wedge earns. 4 winners at an estimated $10,607/month with only 1,736 median ratings. Contrast with generic AI art below. AI writing shows the same thinness (2 winners at an estimated $7,714/month) — real money, very few proven slots.
The trap and the tripwire
AI art is the cautionary tale of the whole wave. The most-hyped bucket in the table has the worst winner economics: 27 winners at a median of just an estimated $1,929/month. Everyone wrapped the same image models; users learned the output is interchangeable; price collapsed. Hype is a supply signal, not a demand signal.
Don’t put “GPT” in your app name. We track 96 apps with “ChatGPT” or “GPT” in the title; 2 clear an estimated $1k/month at an estimated $1,929 median — and the bucket exists in this guide only as a warning. Third-party use of the mark invites trademark complaints and App Store review trouble. Whatever discoverability it once bought, it isn’t worth building a business on someone else’s trademark.
The 2022 waves: already consolidated
Three buckets share a fingerprint — median release year 2022 and heavier winners: avatar (36 winners at 13,514 median ratings, est. $6,911/month), photo enhancer/upscaler (25 at 2,593, est. $3,214), and transcribe (21 at 3,549, est. $3,857). The 2022 avatar boom minted its winners and closed the door; avatar incumbents now carry ten times the rating mass of a typical AI-titled winner.
This is the structural lesson of the table: AI niches age in dog years. The gap between “open field” and “consolidated” was roughly eighteen months for avatars. Whatever you pick, you’re either early to a wave or you bring a wedge the incumbents can’t cheaply copy — there is no slow middle.
Companion apps: real revenue, priced-in risk
The girlfriend/companion bucket clears the bar for a real market: 60 winners, an estimated $4,123/month median, modest 2,079 median ratings, wave vintage 2023. The economics are legitimate. The risk is concentrated elsewhere: App Store review is visibly sensitive about this space, guidelines around generated content keep evolving, and a policy change can reprice the entire niche overnight. That’s not a reason to dismiss it — it’s a risk to weigh like any other, with the note that it stacks on top of the model-cost and churn risks every AI app already carries.
How we measured — and what this can’t tell you
- Buckets = substring or word-boundary matches on the App Store title, across all categories. Crude but consistent: an app can land in multiple buckets, and an AI app with a fanciful name is missed entirely.
- AI-adjacent buckets include non-AI apps — assistant, avatar, tutor, companion, and transcribe measure the niche, not the technology. The table labels them.
- Every dollar figure is a labeled model estimate. GetAppNiche generates it with a proprietary multi-signal model; nobody outside Apple has reported per-app revenue.
- Median ratings of winners = incumbent-mass proxy: how big are the apps you’d need to displace. Median release year of winners = wave age: how recently the niche last admitted new winners.
- This is the supply side only. We have no App Store search-volume data — pair any candidate with a demand check in the free keyword tool.

From table row to build decision
- Start where winners are young and small. Voice/speech AI (1,215 median ratings), assistant (1,408), and AI chat (1,761) are the current peer-fight zones. Treat 2022-vintage rows as closed unless you have a genuine wedge.
- Check demand before falling in love. Run 2–3 keywords for the niche through the free App Store keyword tool. A soft supply side with no search volume is a gap nobody wants filled.
- Look at who’s actually earning. Search the niche in the free app revenue checker — several mid-sized estimated earners is a healthy market; one whale wrapping the same model as everyone else is the AI-art pattern repeating.
- Model the API bill. An estimated $5,143/month median is gross. Inference costs scale with usage in a way a habit tracker’s costs never do — a niche where usage is bursty (headshots, summaries) keeps more margin than always-on chat.
- Then run the full checklist in our app idea validation guide before writing code.
The churn that makes this field soft also means the table has a shelf life — the July 2026 numbers above will drift faster than any category page we publish.
